Adoor CPI MLA Chittayam Gopakumar has been elected as the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly’s Deputy Speaker. As of right now, no one from the opposition parties is planning to run in the by-elections. The deadline for submitting nominations to run in the Deputy Speaker election was yesterday at noon.

The LDF did not run a Deputy Speaker candidate in 2001 when the UDF had a strong majority. The United Democratic Party used this strategy and did not field any candidates. Unopposed Deputy Speakers have been elected eight times in the Assembly’s history.

Chittayam Gopakumar has served two terms in the Assembly as the representative for Adoor. He earned his high school and college diplomas from Anchalum Moodu and Kottarakkara, respectively. He began his political career as an activist for the Balavedi and AISF parties. He was the secretary of the AISF Kottarakkara Taluk, the vice president of the Kollam District, and a member of the State Committee.
