Chittayam Gopakumar, a CPI member from Adoor, will be the Deputy Speaker of the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. Opposition parties have stated they will not stand in the by-elections. Nominations had to be submitted by noon-yesterday to contest the Deputy Speaker election.
Earlier in 2001, when the UDF got a large majority, the LDF did not field a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker. Following this model, the UDF did not place any candidates. This is the eighth time in the history of the Assembly that a Deputy Speaker has been elected unopposed.
Chittayam Gopakumar has been representing Adoor in the Assembly for the last two terms. He completed his education at Anchalum Moodu and Kottarakkara. Started his career in politics as a Balavedi and AISF activist. He worked as AISF Kottarakkara Taluk Secretary, Kollam District Vice President, and State Committee Member.
